As a recent graduate of a major university in PA, I think Gov. Ed Rendell is correct. In my four years there, I learned that many rural White Pennsylvanians (basically everywhere west of Philly, Allentown, Reading and East of Pittsburgh and Erie) do not think very highly of Blacks, not so much because we are Black, but because we really are the unknown and because of what is seen on TV (evening news and BET). Lynn Swann did have a plus in that he was a former Steeler. I think Obama will have to appeal to the plight of these Central Pennsylvanians (many poor, jobless, former Steel/Mine workers) and maybe appeal to the religion (mostly Catholic).

I concurr. I don't think that sentiment extends only to PA. It seems to be a concern that people are not very vocal about... but I think a great number of voters question whether this country is ready to see a black man become the president.

Sure, Rendell was correct, but so what? Many whites will never be ready for a Black president until they have one they're forced to accept. There shouldn't be a litmus test or timeline specific to Black candidates for hesitant White Americans. Dramatic change will never be in season, so one should never wait to push it forward.

Living in a liberal area of the country, I sometimes forget about Conservative America. One of my best friends goes to a small, Catholic school near Pittsburg, PA, and the types of racism and things she deals with always gives me a reality check. No one said the race would be easy.
